Lawrence, founded in 1697 by Quakers, Dutch Reformed, Scottish and Irish Presbyterians and French Huguenots, was named in 1816 for naval hero Captain John Lawrence, who spoke the now-famous words, "Don't give up the ship." Lawrence Township is known for its diversity and historic beauty. The Main Street Historic District, as well as the beautiful architecture and exhibits of the historic houses and churches, will take you back in time. Lawrence is known for the village of Lawrenceville, a national historic landmark, and for the Lawrenceville School, founded in 1810 with a later design by the famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. The home to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Educational Testing Service and Rider University, Lawrence is close to major thoroughfares, offering public bus transportation, train and airport service and shopping malls.
