John and Mary Hight founded the Borough of Hightstown in 1721. Many of the Borough's well-preserved houses have historic connections from the Colonial and Victorian periods. For example, during the Civil War, the Norton House was the temporary residence of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. The Hightstown area has various historic and recreational sites to visit that are great for families and explorers. The Ely House, which serves as the home for the Hightstown Historical Society, has tours available by appointment. The Stockton Street Historic District also has many antique homes from the early eighteenth century and was recently nationally recognized. The Peddie School, a private, coeducational boarding and day school founded in 1864, occupies a beautiful 280-acre campus in the town and has a golf course.

An assortment of downtown shops, restaurants, and convenient strip malls provide numerous choices for shoppers. Housing includes single-family, condominiums, townhouses, senior housing, and apartments. The community has a number of educational and recreational options through the YMCA, children's pre-school programs, four municipal parks and a boat ramp for fishing on Peddie Lake. Annual events include a Memorial Day Parade, Santa Parade, HarvestFest, and a Youth Fishing Derby.
